Roman Rybarski 1887-1942

He was born in Zator in the Oświęcim district. In 1906, he started studies at the Faculty of Law of the Jagiellonian University. In 1911, he obtained a doctoral degree, and in 1913 a postdoctoral degree. In 1919, he was an expert of the Polish delegation at the peace conference in Paris. From 1922, he was Professor of Political Economy at the Jagiellonian University. In 1926, he founded the Great Poland Camp together with Roman Dmowski. He was also co-founder of the National Party, which was established in 1928. From 1928 to 1935, he directed the work of the parliamentary group of the National Party. A supporter of parliamentary democracy, he headed the older faction of the National Democrats, which opposed the radicalisation of the party’s line that was pushed by its younger activists who were, inter alia, under the influence of Benito Mussolini’s successes in Italy. In 1939, Rybarski became a full member of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences in Kraków. In 1941, he was the Head of the Treasury Department of the underground Polish state. He was murdered by the Germans on 6 March 1942 in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. His most important works included: Idea gospodarstwa narodowego [“Idea of national economy”](1919), System ekonomii politycznej [“System of political economy”](1924), Naród, jednostka, klasa [“Nation, individual, class”] (1926), Polityka i gospodarstwo [“Politics and economy”] (1927), Przyszłość gospodarcza świata [“Economic future of the world”] (1932), Przyszłość gospodarcza Polski [“Economic future of Poland”] (1933), Podstawy narodowego programu gospodarczego [“Foundations of the national economic programme”] (1934), Siła i prawo [“Might and the law”](1936), Idee przewodnie gospodarstwa Polski [“Guiding ideas for Poland’s economy”] (1939).
