Maciej Starzewski 1891-1944

He was born in Kraków where he graduated in law from the Jagiellonian University. From 1914 to 1917, he served in the Legions, and after Poland’s independence had been restored, he fought in the Polish-Bolshevik war; he left the army as a lieutenant. In 1921, he worked as a clerk at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the years 1925 and 1926, he completed postgraduate studies in Paris. In 1928, he obtained a postdoctoral degree, and three years later he became head of the Chair of State Law and International Law at the Jagiellonian University. In 1934, he became Professor. From 1938 to 1939, he was deputy to the Sejm as member of the National Unity Camp. During World War II, he was imprisoned by Germans in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. After returning to Poland, he actively participated in secret teaching at the Faculty of Law of the Jagiellonian University. He died in Kraków. His works include: Prawo państwowe porównawcze [“Comparative state law”] (1928), Elita i wódz w projekcie ustroju Trzeciej Rzeszy [“Elite and the leader in the political system of the Third Reich”] (1933), Systematyka ustrojów politycznych [“Taxonomy of political systems”] (1936), Demokracja i totalizm [“Democracy and totalism”] (1937).
