Author
Aleksander Rembowski 1847-1906

Born on 8 November 1847, he was professor at the University of Warsaw, a positivist who advocated modernisation and a historian of the Polish political and legal system. Together with Adolf Pawiński, Tadeusz Korzon and Władysław Smoleński, he founded the so-called Warsaw historical school, which was to provide an intellectual counterweight to the Krakow and Lviv schools. The Warsaw historians claimed that a plan for state repair was developed near the end of the First Polish Republic, which could not be implemented, however, due to the presence of a strong internal opposition and pressure from neighbouring countries. Aleksander Rembowski died on 9 September 1906. He published, among others: O gminie, jej organizacji i stosunku do państwa [“On the commune, its organisation and relation with the state”] (Warszawa 1873), Jan Ostroróg i jego memoriał... [“Jan Ostroróg and his Memorandum…”] (Warszawa 1884), Historia prawa wieczysto-czynszowego... [“History of the land register and rent law…”] (Warszawa 1886), Izby wyższe i arystokracja nowożytna [“Upper chambers and modern aristocracy”] (Warszawa 1894), Konfederacja i rokosz [“Confederation and rebellion”] (Warszawa 1895), Źródła do historii Pułku Polskiego Lekkokonnego Gwardii Napoleona I [“Sources for the history of the Polish Light Cavalry Regiment of Napoleon I’s Guard”] (Warszawa 1899), Pisma Aleksandra Rembowskiego [“Writings of Aleksander Rembowski”], vol. 1–3 (Warszawa 1901–1906).
