Tomasz Merta 1965-2010

Born in Legnica on the 7th of November 1965, he completed secondary school in Kielce (Hanka Sawicka High School No. IV). He studied Polish philology at the Faculty of Polish Studies of the University of Warsaw. He was a member of the editing board of Res Publika Nowa and the editor-in-chief of Kwartalnik Konserwatywny. He published articles in the press, for instance in the columns of ZnakDziennikPrzegląd Polityczny, and Rzeczpospolita”. He served as the Polish Deputy Minister of Culture and National Heritage (2005-2010), and was one of the principal originators and executors of the most important undertakings of the first decade of the 21st century aimed at restoring to Polish history its proper place in the public debate. He was a co-editor and co-author of the following books published by the Polish Centre for Political Thought (OMP): Pamięć i odpowiedzialność (2005), and W obronie zdrowego rozsądku (2000). He died in the plane crash near Smolensk, in Russia, on the 10th of April, 2010.
