Author
Franciszek Siarczyński 1758-1829

He was born on 12 October 1758 in Hruszowice (Przemyśl land). Initially, he was educated by Jesuits in Jarosław and Rzeszów, but when that order was dissolved in 1773 by the decision of Pope Clement XIV, Siarczyński joined the Piarist Order and continued his education in Rzeszów, Międzyrzecz Korecki and Kraków. He then taught at the Piarist school in Łuków and at the Collegium Nobilium and Collegium Regium in Warsaw. His brother Antoni was associated with the court of king Stanisław August Poniatowski. Thanks to his brothe, Franciszek Siarczyński started working for the king, e.g. prepared a treaty Krótka fizyczna i historyczna wiadomość o soli (1788) for the king. In 1790, he became a parish priest in Kozienice, and in 1791 he was awarded the title of an honorary canon of Warsaw, and later a canon of Warmia. During the Kościuszko Uprising, together with F.K. Dmochowski, he co-edited two newspapers: Gazeta Wolna Warszawska and Gazeta Rządowa. In 1799, he became a parish priest in Łańcut, and in 1803 he assumed the same post in Jarosław. In 1818, the Austrian government thwarted his plans to become a Tyniec bishop. In 1827, Siarczyński became the first director of Zakład Naukowy im. Ossolińskich in Lviv (the popular Ossolineum scientific and cultural institute). He died on 7 November 1829 in Lviv. Apart from journalistic texts, where, among others, he criticised lavish funerals (Uwaga na koszta pogrzebowe w Wiedniu, 1781) or presented his views on the importance of science and language for the nation (as in his brochure entitled Zakus nad zaciekami Wszechnicy Krakowskiej, czyli uwagi nad niektórymi tej akademii dysertacjami, 1789), he also wrote on topics related to geography (e.g. Geografia czyli Opisanie naturalne, historyczne i polityczne krajów i narodów we czterech częściach świata zawierających się, 1790–1794) and history (Obraz wieku panowania Zygmunta III, issued after the author’s death in 1843–1858; Dzieje narodu i kraju Rusi Czerwonej, 1828–1829).
